December 23, 2007 - UPDATE

A lot of eyes will be pinned to the Upper Delaware watershed over the next day or so. What we have going on is a mega-surge of warm air, a decent shot of rain and a significant snowpack, especially in the high terrain. Runoff will certainly be something to watch. The NYC Delaware watershed impoundments, despite having a void release program in place, are 80-90%+. This is probably enough room to handle the runoff from this event - - - but afterwards we could be looking at Cannonsville being very close to full or even possibly spilling. By the way the Hale Eddy gage is showing 1,700+ cfs - - which is due to the void release program.

December 4, 2007 - NJ - Island Beach State Park

The past weekend we took a few days to hit the salt once again. This time we were greeted with extremely fly friendly conditions one day, and some of the coldest/windiest weather FFPA has ever hit the suds on the other. And with that, one day was good, and the other was terrible..go figure. The good weather day had bass right in the wash as the sun went down. The bait was tight to the beach, and so were the predators. Some of these fish were big. Easily, 30"+. It was quite something to see them wallow in such shallow water. The action did not last long, but it was really impressive to witness. Definitely, the best bass blitz witnessed this season.

As for day two...well, lets just say it was a long day. We were on the water at false dawn, with temps in the lo-30s. Fortunately, the winds were not too bad at first, but they would soon mix down to the surface, and switch to the north. The air temps never did get out of the 30s. Just about everything stayed off the beach, and it was only for a short bit in the extreme am, that had the fish in tight to the beach. Bird play was all over the place throughout the day, but it would never get within casting range. We managed to see a handful of shorts caught on metal at daybreak. Other than that - nothing going the rest of the day. With the weather going down hill for Sunday, we called the weekend short...and headed home. Time will tell if we decide to hit the salt again this season.

Working a sinking line in a hard north wind.
